I know that this is an old subject but the situation may have changed since the question was last posed:

What is the cheapest method of receiving the 5 UK terrestial channels plus SKy news etc.

Currently Ihave an extra sub on my uk box - yes I know it is not legit and SKY whack me for not having it hooked to a UK telephone line. What are the alternatives? Does freeview still exist ? Does a local SKy sub work for UK channels and what is the cost plse?

I have a 1.3m dish and digibox

Michael -Yes I didn't realise that there had been a recent discussion. Can we update threads in FAQ?

I am surprised that we have not had any Jeremy Clarkson outbursts from the Lincolnshire continegent. I have to say he was bang out of order.....as always!!

I understand that the usual practice is to bring out your own sky receiver ( or aquire one locally ) and that providing all monies are remitted to Sky from a UK address there is not a problem. ( if not strictly legal )
BUT what if you do not want sky ??

We don,t have in the UK and do not want to put more money in Mr Murdochs pockets.

What alternatives are there apart from local cable. CABO etc ??

I have heard that for a 1 off £20 to Sky (from a UK address) you can now get the card that gives you the free to air channels.

UK TV in the Algarve

HOW SOME PEOPLE GET AROUND IT
you cannot get freview digital tv in the algarve
but you can get uk tv in the algarve from satellite only,there are two methods

1 FREESAT

you purchase a satellite receiver and card in the uk [or anywhere else but uk is cheaper 150ukp] and get a dish fitted in portugal with this you will get the following programs at no subscription [the address you use in the uk must have a tv licence ,no phone line is required ]

you will need to subscribe to sky for this although sky will not let you subscribe if you are not in the uk .you can get arround this by ordering it from the uk .for this you would need to supply a uk address
and payment details[you can go through third partys to provide you with address but this costs large amounts so if you have friends or family in the uk they can do this for you cheaper ].

there are 2 types of receivers you can purchase 1 the standard box which you can get in the uk free if you subscribe ,2 the skyplus which costs 150 ukp

sky normally ask for you to have a phone line connected to the box you can get around this by paying 25ukp at the time of installation

I live in the uk and in the algarve. in the algarve i drink and eat .and in the uk i run a satelitte installation company .and for a drink in the algarve i will assist anyone with any problems relating to satelitte

THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR
Companys that take 12 months payments in advance for subscriptions [they cannot pay sky in advance for your subscription if they dont pay the monthly subs sky will switch your box off] there are trustworthy people out there but beware

companys that charge fees for providing addresses some of these fees are hundreds of pounds for doing 30 mins work some dealers are trustworthy and charge fair prices

make sure you get the correct dish size fitted in the algarve you need at least 1.2 mtre 1.5 mtre is better you may still not get all of the programs all of the time

Just one question. can I use the same box I am currently using to access SKY in Portugal through my second SKY sub for FREE SAT? If yes, then all I need to do is purchase a card. Presumably I can alos ask fo anothe card to use in the UK and stuff MR Murdoch altogether!!

True - you can't get Freeview Digital as that is UK terrestrial.
You can get the Non-Subscription channels though through the Sky dish.

You will need a viewing card though to decrypt the signal.
It is this viewing card that I believe now costs £20 one-off for Free to Air channels. I don't think it will be easy to find this on the Sky website because, of course, they make nothing from it. You might find reference to it on Ch4, ITV or BBC sites.

There is also the £150 one/off option from http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/?pID=2 which seems to provide you with the digibox etc - but it seems to include an installer as well who will visit your home and connect it up for you. He might be late for tea!!

Suggest next time you are in the UK you give Sky a call and ask them pointedly if they have a viewing card for the free channels!

all you have to do is ring up and you can order one for 20 ukp but you must have a uk address if you havent got one i will arrange for you

The information on receiving freesat and Sky was most informative. I wonder if anyone can clarify the following for me?

I was told last week whilst in Carvoeiro that BBC Prime is not available. I telephoned BBC Prime this morning and was told that there is no reason why I should not be able to receive in Portugal. I need a digi box which should be available locally or alternatively I should be able to buy one in the UK. Details listed on the BBC Prime website as follows:

Satellite: Eutelsat Hotbird 6 - 13 deg East
Frequency: 11131 MHz
Antenna Configuration Name: 1 Hotbird
Polarisation: Vertical
Beam: Wide Beam
FEC: 3/4
Symbol Rate: 5.632
Conditional Access: Must be "Viaaccess" compatible.

I also need a viewing card which is priced at £85 per year. The satellite dish should be 90cm (but I was informed it could be smaller or larger - local dealer should be able to clarify this).

Does anyone know of a reason why BBC Prime is not an option in Carvoeiro/Mato Serrao and who would be able to supply?

If you are in CVO, R J Tecnica on Rua do Farol are very knowledgeable on what can be received and how. They also sell the free-to-view cards.
