Do not worry a bit.
The last thing Skype.com would do is to send virus or damage your PC.
It would be the same thing as your baker putting nails in your bread. You would not buy from him/her anymore.
Skype is in the market for good, they have partnership with Siemens and others. Some cordeless phone handsets from Siemens (the Gigaset) are Skype compatible that means that in the same phone you get both the regular landline calls and the skype calls, for which you must get a wireless USB skype antena/receiver.

Skype is making money over landline calls.

This new techology (VOIP) will bring a revolution in the telephony market. Some businees are converting to VOIP and asking their costumers to do so.

As far as headsets go - I highly recomend the Medusa 5.1 (also available as USB if you don't have a soundcard)

Superior sound quality and noise reduction (3 speakers in each shell)
High quality microphone
Comfortable head support and shells

You can spend hours chatting, listening to music or playing games without getting sore ears.

there are of course variations, and in price no doubt. Does anyone know where there are cheaper ones, or is this about right?

Medusa seems to be an headset.
The skype handset is different. It is like a regular handset telephone.
You either can dial from it to landlines (with Skypeout therefore paying) or call a name in the skype predefined list (free).

Jekyl & Hyde are right: no free dinners.
I put 10 Euros on Skypeout and with the excitement spend it in a few days for landline numbers. Anyway I would have spent at least 4 times more if I would have used either my mobile or my landline phone. I am now more controled.

They are actually a lot cheaper than in germany - my headset cost me EUR 100 with post and packaging.

Hi everyone

I'm new here and I'm not in Portugal as you can see, but fingers crossed I might be at some point :)

With regards to Skype, I have been using it for at least 9 months now and I have never had any problems with it at all. I also use SkypeIn and SkypeOut which are both really good, although I find the quality I little worse than the straight Skype to Skype. You can also get voicemail for your Skype and that is also excellent.

I know it may sound too good to be true but so far I have found no faults.

Also, you can get really cheap headsets to use, mine cost £3 and I haven't had to replace it yet!

Cheers

Just bear in mind that it is run by the same people who started Kazaa, the very best place to get a worm or virus. Also there is something about Skype using your pc to act as a sort of base station (can't remember the details) . Ah here it is http://security.web.cern.ch/security/skype/

If something seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

From the site you refer I quote this about Skype
"...This may include the ability for your computer to help anonymously and securely facilitate communications between other users of the Skype Software who, due to network and firewall constraints, cannot establish direct connections."

This is the nature of P2P connections. You are in a big network. Likewise the internet itself in which you may catch all sort of nasty things.
Universities and institutions like the famous one you mentioned may be not very happy with everybody on campus using skype. The overload of internet traffic would put some problems. After all the computers there should be used to work.

paramonte, I wish your faith in mankind was held by everyone else. In this case people really are out to get you and you need to be very careful. I've just spent the last hour on the phone helping people with security problems.
