The Sky channels are available to those who pay a UK subscription & bring their Sky card to Portugal to activate their receiver. This is of course illegal.Many, like me, use the Sky box without the card & can now only receive News, Travel & religious programmes, no UK terrestrial stations or Sky content are available.

Silver SKY cards are not usable in another box without some expert ( illegal ) fiddling about and one of the reasons for the re issue of cards is to block this completely.
Bringing out your own card may not be a solution.

Bringing out your box and card MAY work but of course you will not be able to watch BBC 1, ITV etc. I have the IPTV box and get a fantastic picture and 14 day catchup TV for all the channels so for me it is great. If the BBC want to charge eventually it will not make much difference as I suspect having a UK TV Licence will cover it. At the moment IPTV or Filmon in conjunction with Apple TV is a great way to go!!!

If you bring your box and card from the UK you will get your normal Sky channels but none of the lost free channels. Unless your box is plugged into the phone line Sky does not know where it is. Alternatively look into having a slingbox installed alongside your box in the UK and retrieve all your UK channels digitally in Portugal.

I couldn't be assed to go to the bother of bringing a box and card but my interpretation of the various posts leads me to believe there is still some Sky facility available in The Algarve? The reference to Harry's Bar being one. For some reason I believed all UK TV through Sky had disappeared - it appears it has not?

My earlier question asking if the only way to get UK terrestrials is through the IPTV Box and €18 pm subscription - was answered, in part with links to retuning sites. This suggests that there might be an alternative to the IPTV system. Is there?

In short - it appears that the many solutions that have been aired on this topic have a degree of complexity. Is there an inexpensive plug and play solution that does not require a degree in computer science

I was advised to do nothing rashly, but to give it a month and see what surfaces as the best or preferred solution.
We are 2 weeks into that month, and there are several solutions being touted, but I wont jump yet.

What I have done is bought an Apple TV box to work between my I-pad and my smart TV. That works fine for us, but is not the idiot proof solution we seek for longterm coverage............

So, I wait and see..............

.........and in the meantime watch on my Apple TV box

Just gone through our available Freesat channels which are

CBS 134 to 137.
Horror 138 to 139.
Bet 140 to 141.
True Ent 142.
News. France 24 to NHK. 205 to 209.
True movies 302 to 303.
Music. All 400 to 523.
Kids. 603 to 606 then 650 to 696. No CBBC.
Radio. All except BBC and RTE.
All shopping

We are coming over to CVO end of March and will look into as many of the options possible but keeping abreast of what we see here on this site and the discussions noted and advice received.

If we rent long term in Portugal we shall do so in Cabanas de Tavira, the other side of Tavira a small fishing village nearer Spain.
It is flatter for me and cheaper for most groceries and has the added benefit of being so close to Spain where most drive across for cheaper products and petrol/diesel.
Maybe the satllite from Spain being closer to us may help us to continue for Sky?!!!

My requirements for tv and phone are;

Must be able to get Brit tv in so much as BBC Channels ,( we still have Sky in UK,. Sky provide us with Sky tv including HD/3D/Smart /box etx, broadband and phone line)
I need to be able to have a cheap phone line for me to continue running my oil syndicate here in the UK, wherby I use the phone to phone out approx 100 phone calls each order and receive approx 100 phone calls each oil order, this is all apart from normal phone activity .

Tis a nightmare for all, not just in watching what we would like but the enormous activity involved in trying to sort it all out

1ASTRA 2G TO BE LAUNCHED IN MAY
The last of the three replacement satellites for the UK will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan this May.
Astra 2G is identical to Astra 2E, seen here in launch preparationAstra 2G's beams will be almost identical to those of Astra 2E and 2F, which are now in service. The 2G addition is likely to be the last major shakeup of services at 28.2º, and mark the closure of the elderly Astra 2A. Its channels will move to the newer satellites.
Areas of eastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean which cannot current receive the Europe beams from Astra 2E and 2F are likely to lose Sky completely, in addition to February's BBC losses. Exactly which channels will move to 2G's UK beam is unknown, but some certainly will. The extra capacity 2G will bring may finally allow the introduction BBC One HD to all regions.
