Re: Which Supermarket?
We have always been happy with Intermarche, tried others but always end up back there.
Good selection of wine

light touch paper, stand well back
Mrs Sunman votes Intermarche - choice is the most expansive with lots of recognisable names, albeit not the cheapest
of the 2nd tier I always liked Pao de Acucar up by Slide & Splash, good value & range, nice Asian section

Re: Which Supermarket?
Aldi is great for packaged, non-branded goods, but every time we shop there we end up going on to Intermarche to get all the stuff that they do not stock.cumbria sue wrote:now youv'e all got used to it what is the verdict on Aldi
It all seems kind of fruitless (semi-pun intended!)
Re: Which Supermarket?
I'm able to get most things at Pingo Doche, but pick up the basics at Aldi. Talking to a few portuguese friends however, they won't use Aldi as prefer to support portuguese companies, not sure which supermarkets are really portuguese owned though? At the end of the day its quality and price for me. I always try to make Silves market on saturday mornings for fruit and veg, you can't beat it
Re: Which Supermarket?
Apolonia for me, everything quality, wines and spirits; bread and cakes cooked on premises.

Re: Which Supermarket?
We used to shop at Intermarche and Aldi etc, thought the selection was ok but the prices were a bit steep in places.
When we are in Portugal nowadays we tend to go along to Guia, to the shopping centre; and one day we decided to pop into Iceland (we'd heard it was overpriced - granted, it is for some products), but to our surprise, it was actually really good value and the selection wasn't too bad either. So, we tend to go there more often than not.

We use Pao de Acucar, Pingo and Intermarche! Like the new look Intermarche.
Re: Which Supermarket?
The handiest big supermarket is Intermarche. They have a loyalty card, and while we always use it, we don't know the benefits of using it. With Continente you clearly see what the benefits are, as the savings are displayed on the tally roll. Also the staff usually ask you if you want redeem previous savings or carry them forward. We went to Continente once on last visit and saved €17 on shopping, €1.80 on visiting sand world, and got 12c per litre off diesel (€2.40) (added to loyalty card, not in cash). But it is a pain going to Guia so we only go once a visit. After that its Intermarche for convenience. Unbelievably the little shop on the in road is cheaper than Intermarche for some items.

Re: Which Supermarket?
Thanks to all of you for your replies - I think I am now more confused than ever.
As I am hiring a car for the first time and will more than likely get lost, I suspect I'll end up shopping in Spain
