Went to pay my toll today for the period 14th April to 3rd May. Total outstanding €28.50 but only €5.60 relating to my period of hire. I know I have run up at least €20 but it wasn't there & I haven't used the A22 in 5 days so the time delay seems to be growing !!! Paid my €5.60 & then tried to pre pay for tolls I have run up yesterday & tolls for tomorrow. No can do at the PO & I'm off Sunday so I guess they'll have to fine me & then take me to court.

Could be a busy year for me in the Portuguese courts ...........I wonder if Theresa would extradite me if things get heavy ???????????

Surely if you've had the car since 14th April any tolls shown as owing must be yours?

Apparently not. The Post Mistress punched in my dates & Reg No. & the amount due €5.60. The balance is outstanding from previous users before the 14th.

my understanding was that if a car had not used the A22 during the past 5 days then it would show no outstanding amount. I (obviously incorrectly) assumed it was a 'rolling' 5 days and that once the 5th previous day passed with no further use of the A22 that the outstanding amount would revert to zero.

That's what I thought too. It did that with a car I hired in February for 10 days (fortunately not my tolls). Perhaps the post mistress used the wrong dates?

Edit for clarity : "5 days" being 2 working days plus 5 working days after use

It takes two days before the toll charge becomes payable and then you have five working days to pay. After that it becomes a fine, supposedly.

That is why I would assume that if there are payable charges on your car they are probably due to your use. There have been two holidays recently so that might confuse the timings slightly.

You can check here for details of outstanding payable tolls charges, though it doesn't detail when the charges were incurred.

Is that because we're not discussing the roadside enhancements and are back on topic?

No worries mate. I'll hire the lawyer, ask Theresa not to extradite us and i'll rope in the managing director of a certain airport transfer company to give evidence that we were tootling along at 50kph on the N125 when the offence was committed. What can go wrong !

my experience on the N125

arrival: 25.4...9:00 AM....national holyday....no trucks...8 roundabounds...no ladies....40 min to CVO (with 90 km/h constantly, Peugeot 107)

leaving: 9.5......6:15 AM.....no trucks...8 roundabouts...no ladies.....one kamikaze (overtaking with 120 km/h on the right line at algarveshopping)......40 min to the airport

that was a close shave

Hi, just back from two weeks holiday. Booked Drive4Fun through Economy Car Hire and took advantage of the Transponder offer for the A22. My recommendation would be pick a company that offers a transponder, there are others now but Drive4Fun was easy and straight forward. 20€, 5€ hire fee, 15€ credit. This covers each way from the airport and a couple of other sections if you want and takes away any possible holdups on the N125.

The N125 is busy but not stupid yet! Yes there are some idiots on it but they can be encountered when visiting other locations where you would not use the A22 anyway. The A22 is dead; however there are still idiots on it that are doing way over the speed limit – not as bad as a recent post though. :P

There is a consensus that the A22 is indeed now very quiet, It is not quite the cash cow the Portuguese authorities thought it would be.
