We take coffee bags. We are not ultra-fussy about our coffee and find them ideal and a lot better than instant.

I'm just going to grap a cup of instant tea. Has to be instant as milk gets pinched!

They sell a full range of machines, and capsules in both Radio Popular and Modello.

Pickwick is right....you dont want that machine and attendant cost in a rental villa.

We have an expresso type machine, but the maid says it is never used, because we dont supply the coffee, probably.

Thanks guys for a fascinating insight into the latest machines on the market.

I bought a Krupps expresso machine about 4 years ago in Modello, and at the time it cost about €60. I couldn't believe it because the same machine in UK at the time was close to £100. It uses ground coffee from the packet (or your own grinder if you can be bothered). Whilst I would highly recommend this, unfortunatley it seems there are few if any of this type of machine available these days, and choice seems to be down to a "pod" machine, or a "bean to cup" machine.

Hi S_Monty

There are still many Espresso machines available and you can use both ground coffee and little protions of ground coffee in filter paper discs (easier to clean the coffee basket) but ground cofeee starts to oxidise as soon as you open the packet (usually packed in a protective nitrogen atmosphere) and this results in bitter dull coffee. You can slow this process down by closing the bag tightly and storing in the fridge. This is one of the reasons Nespresso (and the older but still very good Falvia by Mars) brew such a great tasting coffee.

A favoutite desert of mine is a ball of vanilla ice cream with a sot of Espresso on top - the darler the roast and more intense the flavour the better - Affogato!!!

We bought 2 Delta machines last year, one for here and one for the UK, 49 euros each. Ours in the UK had just expired. Several outlets had them on offer. We bought the first from Radio Popular, went back for another but sold out, but found some more at Continente in Portimao, not at Portimao retail park but the old Modelo off the dual carriageway heading for Praia da Rocha. Both have given excellent service.

I use the old fashioned way - Plastic coffee filter holder over cup/pot, with paper filter and ground coffee. Quick, cheap, easy to clean, and difficult to break.

Goodness lots to consider. Why did my BIL suggest this. Gosh have enough decisions to make :D not sure what is wrong with my cafitierre. Seems to me if he buys us one we would need to get it in CVO then have deliveries whilst on holiday (or send to a good friend :D ) having to lock it up would mean more lockable space. Is this really worth it.

I have the frother/milk heater and never use it, I add cold milk and microwave it for 50 seconds instead, so happy to swap it for a good bottle of Esporao!!! Jeff the capacity of the tank is small but it has been designed that way for good reason. Water left in a sealed container for a long time loses oxygen (freshness) and can harbour bacteria which can multiply, so annoying I agree but nonetheless a good idea is behind the principal.

Pickwick
thanks for that. i'd never thought about that as it is refilled at least 3 times a day in our house!

I have one of these in office that I haven't used for 2 years because of the tablets http://www.amazon.co.uk/Krups-Nespresso ... B00069NMB4. They are expensive online but you can buy alternative tablets at Jumbo that fit it and are quiet cheap. Still I prefer real espresso coffee. It cost me around €300 for the machine 4.5 years ago, if you want to try it, I could be persuaded to let it go for a few euros!

Hi themoneyman
Nespresso machines do make real espresso. Water forced under pressure through ground coffee produces espresso. Nespresso offer several high quality blends and the machines produce a perfect espresso complete with crema.

Thanks Pickwick, to be honest I don't dislike Nespresso, it is easy and the tastes is good. However, I do prefer coffee from non-pod machines. Also although this is not relevant to my personal taste, according to the Istituto Nazionale Espresso Italiano, Nespresso falls short of being classified as Espresso on several points. But as I said, I just prefer a non-pod espresso.

We have a nespresso coffee machine here in Holland it:s our coffee treat on a weekend. Love the different infused flavours you can buy here, so just use it as a nice end to an evening meal instead of your main coffee maker. Nice gift :D
