so the GNR are hastily writing down the number plates
I doubt haste is needed, they have bags of time between each vehicle passing.

Actually what is happening is that all the cameras in the gantries have failed, so the GNR are hastily writing down the number plates of all the cars, then typing them into their iPads.
if this is true then its no wonder that Portugal is in the s**t. The role of police in any democracy is to uphold the law and protect the rights of citizens (etc) Not to do the work of a private (or semi private) company who are so incompetitant that they cannot implement what should be a very simple process.

try to imagine postmen in UK unable to deliver post next week and pc plod going door to door with mail.

This is the reply I just got from Yorcar

The toll charges on A22 are exclusively electronic. This means that there are no payment stations across the road. If you intend to use the highway very often, I suggest you purchase an electronic device on any post office that will identify the car on the road. Then you make pre-payments to freely cruise across the road. Without the device, the car will be identified by its registration plate and the payment should be made on any post office up to 5 days after the toll use. Missing payments will generate a traffic ticket under your responsibility.

Doesn't make sense to me?

Doesn't make sense to me either, the whole thing is just crazy and no one seems to know what
the answer is.

When we collected our car on saturday we were asked for CC details , we will be emailed when the charges appear so that we can authorise the payment.

If this works it seems like a good way forward. No waitiing in post offices etc .

The idea of each car being fitted with a transponder is meeting a lot of resistance on economic grounds.
IE Take a big company with 500 cars x E27.50 ( tranponder cost ) = E13750 up front payment.
100 cars use the toll /day at an average 5 euros toll means that the company has to find that money before they get anything back from the hirer.

It would be useful to know the name of the car rental companies, so that we can see who is helping with the problem and who is not.

Well, I hate to say it as I am loyal to them but the advice I'm getting from YOR is not that helpful. I'm not overly concerned this trip, we return to Faro on 1/1/12, so the 125 should be fairly quiet.

Just been avised by Zitauto:
"Subject: A.22 Tolls
Dear Customer,
On the subject mentioned above, we must inform you that since the 8th December 2011 by order of the government the use of the A.22 has to be paid and therefore:
1- When crossing the A.22, the vehicle will be registered by their porches in the registration system.
2- The portals have different prices, but the price per kilometer is about 9 cents (eg. From Vila Real de Santo António to Lagos - € 11.60).
3- The rent a car company will be notified and required by law to provide identification of the user/driver of the vehicle.
4- The customer will then be notified at his home address for payment of uses/or passages in A.22"

and:
About the tools (A22), you can pay at the pay shop ( post offices), or if not, then you’ll receive it at home to pay it.
Other option is, start to use the EN 125 which is free.

...but no mention of a surcharge/handling charge by company.

Just driven up to Bilbao via Beja for a change. Nice trip, shame about the weather! Is it possible to cross the border at the eastern end of the A22 and avoid the tolls by using the 125 to junction 18 then over the border bridge and vice-versa? :?:
