monte dourado

Post by scottishstacey »

Hey guys,

Just would like to know exactly how steep is monte dourado!?? as ive told already said we have my partners mum coming who is 60 and doesnt do too well with the big hills! we know its quite steep but if its really bad then i think wed better give it a miss and look for somewhere else? spoke to a very nice lady about a apartment there and it looks very nice and would suit us. Even if its a little hill the mother in law will prob still moan but shel just be getting pushed up it!! lol   i guess we can just shove her in a taxi haha. Also does it have any restaraunts etc. Any reviews from people who have stayed there would be great!!

cheers

If you are staying between the reception and the village out road the hill is exceptionally steep, even a challenge for the fittest.
However we had family staying on the otherside of Monte Dourado, towards the market, and that approach is not so bad, brings you out on restaurant hill, still a climb but much shorter and not so steep.

I would recommend trying Lower Monte Dourado, no hills to navigate apart from the incline up restaurant hill.

God that doesnt sound good  I know the owner would probably say this anyway but shes just told me that although the hill is steep its short and her 80 year old relatives manage it. the apartment is called 44b dalia. i can send a link if it would help find the location

A mountain goat would struggle up some parts of the hill but that's Carvoeiro.

If you go into info, then maps you will see where it is sited. Basically the complex is on a hill and Dalia is one of the highest places. Our property is near there and I would not recommend to anyone unless they are fit and well, or are going by car. There are not any restaurants on site, although A Palmeira is a fairly level walk away. There are also pools on the site.
Mind you Carvoeiro itself is hilly, and this is part of its charm, and can give fabulous views. But, it does make it difficult for those who are less fit.

We usually stay at the Narciso row, just opposite the pool at Dalia. There is access to the small road going down into the village with a (hidden) access to a stairs down to restaurant hills. It's some 100 steps but I think the view from the dalia "b" appartements is worth to stay there ("b" is upstairs...). And as Jaylay wrote, the road down along the market is not so steep.
I would give it a try and at least you might push her up the hill every evening - that gives you some exercise :P :P

Yes that's Monte Carvoeiro. It's not quite as steep but a longer distance. The road that goes up from Sullys, overlooking the beach has terraced steps and you can take plenty of stops to look at the view. Alternatively, you can go up the hill by the primary school, which I would say is a shorter distance.

I am 62 years old and my wife is 15 years younger. She stops for a couple of rests on her way up and I wait and wait and wait for her at the top. :P

Its so hard to remember where all the places are, feels like it was soooo long ago that i was there. Ive been looking at monte carvoeiro, looks nice and i like the fact that it has restaurants and a few bars there. Dont really mind if its a bit longer distance as long as its walkable to the main square and not too steep. :D

What I sometimes do is go up the steps to Ma Jas and have a drink to set me up for the climb. Then up the hill past the school and into the Cocktail Gardens for a recovery drink before continuing to QdP. Works for me. :)

Yes, but the Monte Dourado map on this site shows where the actual blocks are on site. Some are further up hill than others.
