Cape St Vincent

Post by jantje »

Sorry, i know its not general CVO but i holiday in CVO and always enjoyed a drive out to the Cape. You couldn't reach the lighthouse by car due to the brilliant little market stalls & the great hot dog stall saying 'last Bratwurst before America!!!'

This year, no stalls and hardly any tourists, what a let down. Whoever has opened the cafe & shop in the lighthouse and possibly stopped all the little stalls outside has totally killed the character of the place. For the last 5 years it was heaving with people but this year it was dead!! We were able to drive right up to the lighthouse.

Big let down, anyone know why or did we just pick a bad day?

Sounds like an improvement to me. no tatty tourist stands or " burger vans ".
Its one of the wildest most impressive sceneries in europe why spoil it .

Believe me it hasn't improved it. The stands weren't 'tatty' and judging by the complete lack of people there, i reckon a few feel the same way. The stands didn't detract from the beauty of the place, i still love it out there but part of the experience has definitely gone for me.

I doubt anyone was drawn to the lighthouse to visit the stalls. I always thought they distracted from the remoteness of the location and I won't be mourning their passing.

You may be right but the numbers speak for themselves, it was deserted out there. I also love just standing on the cliffs and gazing out to sea and the remoteness but something has been lost. Does anyone know the reason? Is it to do with maybe littering which i could understand as it would ruin the natural beauty or is it financially guided by the lighthouse company people?

It is part of the popular excursion route and maybe it was quieter because the coach parties had not arrived.

Its always busy when they do which is why we went early morning before they did.

I see no problems with the stalls, as long as they're monitored and have to be maintained to a high specification. You can only look at remoteness for a certain period of time before it gets boring.
Women need stalls to shop, they're not interested in rocks and waves or history.

If Pato is right , its an even better reason to go there as they cannot spend their money.

There is probably another reason , it is a national park and maybe the authorities have clamped down on un authorised traders.

The stalls were all still there in July so either you picked a bad day or it's only just changed.
