Illegal trapping of little birds.

Well done maccasa for finding out the facts, I had been told by GNR officers, the vet, and various other Portuguese persons that the trapping was extremely illegal but had no official confirmation. Perhaps you could post the e-mail address of the Federation on this site so it can be there for future reference and saves others pm'ing
you. Meantime I have sent you a pm.

Yesterday I found another area with the traps whilst out walking the dogs, not too far from the original one. I'm sure that there are many many such areas and now we know it is illegal perhaps others out there reading this will keep their eyes open and report any incidences.

I shall certainly contact the Federation and try to obtain some maps showing the areas concerned, maybe I can print out something from Google earth?!!

Let the authorities do their thing! If you are not happy with that then set up a group to lobby those who should be doing something to stamp out the practice. Taking the law into your own hands is never a good idea and in some cases downright bloody dangerous, not to mention stupid!

I certainly won't turn into a vigilante and would urge caution to those looking to destroy traps.... most hunters have guns don't they?

Sharon, I was only asking that people report the incidences to the Federation not to take the law into their own hands; which is letting the authorities do their thing. For that reason I asked Macasa to put the e-mail contact on the forum for all to use.
And no, the persons doing this are not the ones that go out shooting every Sunday and Thursday. Sunday and Thursdays and Public Holidays are days to be avoided!

I still can't help thinking that causing criminal damage is not really the way to go sulki.... two wrongs do not make a right, to quote a good old cliche.

....and before anyone mentions the deliberate typo it is because I am a little tired of people being too lazy to correctly spell my name! So please don't take offence if I deliberately spell your name wrong when you get mine wrong!

Nope the u and the i are next door to each other on a keyboard, with your spelling it would have meant moving my finger across two keys instead of one and I couldn't be bothered.... !

Any chance of getting back to the actual topic?

From what I have heard the number of birds being illegally trapped has dramatically reduced in recent days so hopefully that will be the end of it....

So interesting that this is your only post on the topic???

It is a subject that is not going to be resolved on this forum. No amount of chest puffing or teeth gnashing is going to stop this hunting from happening and I happen to think that two wrongs do not make a right, so I suggest you all stop damaging other people's property before it all turns nasty!

As for the spelling of my name..... it is irritating and smacks of laziness if you can't get it right!

I have spoken to the local hunting federation - they are an organisation devoted to Vermin control - they shoot rabbits, squirrels, rats and pigeons mostly. They are very upset at the trapping of small birds and do their best to report the offenders and bring them to justice.

As regards damaging the traps, they totally support it and state - "Small bird trapping is an old outdated tradition, without any modern foundation - rather like badger baiting. If you see a trap, its illegal and should be removed or destroyed" (that also goes for rabbit snares). They dont destroy them at site - they take them down and dispose of them in trash bins to ensure they are not re-used.

Whilst its not on the same scale, if you saw a snare or jaw trap on a uk common or public land, wouldnt you destroy it??
