I heard today that the shortage of hire cars in July/August is not confined to the Alagrve. Apparently there is no availability in Malaga/Marbella as well. They reckon that the companies underestimated tourist numbers but also that they could not get the finance deals that they usually enjoy.

You are right this was in the Iberian newspapers 6 weeks ago but there has been nothing mentioned in the UK and unless visitors read this or other forums they would never have known about the problem until they landed.

I booked my 5 day hire online and then got an email to say I needed to contact them to pay deposit/firm up times etc.....I didn't get round to doing this for 4 days and when I did call they said I was lucky as they were just about to let my car go to someone else as I hadn't been in touch (they had sent 3 emails which I hadnt picked up).Anyhow I have it reserved for pick up 18th Aug but I asked them what the problem was and it is basically as said previously that they did not take enough vehicles for the year as they were thinking tourists numbers would be bad but it aint turned out like that so they have a severe lack of car numbers.
Got mine though at a great price so I'm happy!

Economycarhire.com highlighted this problem on their website at the beginning of the season,& also sent out emails to previous customers.

We have never had any problems with travelrent every time we email we get a reply and quote never had trouble with a shortage cars either we use them everytime we come out and that must be at least tens a year just come back and had one for three wks at next to nothing

Dial how can you say for next to nothing, Mario is in business to make money, not give his cars away. Maybe you got it cheaper than you would elsewhere, did you pay the extra CDW cover within your rental cost.
