Just wanted to say what a lovely time we have had a Tia Ilda last two weeks, thank you very much for recognising our little boy as 'french fry' boy after I posted about how much he loves their chips -we have been going there for years, Paulo always remembers us. On the lovely Isabella's recomendation my husband tried the pork stroganoff and rosti - swiss speciality - and said it was lovely. If you've not tried going there for lunch, sitting overlooking the beach with a nice cold drink 8) we think you've missed a treat. Cant wait for next year. Thanks again
(By the way 8 year old 'french frie' boy aka Sam now thinks he is famous in CV and should have a limo) - like to see that managing the streets!!!

Had good night last week again, spoke to the Manager Silvio and he does read the comments on here and they do take them on board, but he did point out that they do get some very rude people in who talk to them really badly, so perhaps if anyone has a complaint they should try and be calm and then they may get somewhere?

What a shame that one bad experience can colour peoples opinion of a good restaurant. Just returned from Carvoeiro and visited here twice. First time with my wife, mother in law and our daughter and her two friends (all 17yrs) it was a great evening with excellent service, good atmostphere and more importantly tasty, well presented food at good prices. When we returned on our last night (just wife and me), once again great meal and excellent, friendly service. I discovered the mussels which were very tasty and its back on the agenda for our next visit in Oct.
Well done Silvio from Pink Floyd man :D

Things have changed in Tia Ilda! Long wait, still very nice staff :D BUT prices @ nearly 5 euros for bread etc per head are too steep! :( Out of 6 people there was 1 satisfied customer, which is quite a contrast to this time last year. The general consensus of opinion is that there are so many more restaurants to choose from in and around Carvoeiro that Tia Ilda will need to look at their pricing structure and note how many return customers they are getting. The setting is brilliant and so close to the centre of the village that they should do well but everyone is looking for value at this time so think on....

Is it rude to refuse the Couvert? 5 Euro seems a bit steep, especially as there are 6 of us, including young children. I know it is akin to a service charge, but 30 Euro seems steep.

Of course you can refuse the couvert, a good restaurant should " offer " it to you NOT just place it on the table.
It is one of the most commonly heard complaints when diners receive the bill.

The other option is to treat the couvert ( if it is a good one ) as the starter.

In the North of Portugal we have been offered up to 8 different dishes as part of the couvert ( rather like a meze ) and you pay for the ones you eat.

We now refuse the couvert in every restaurant.
Why agree to pay up to 5 euros for usually stale bread, and tinned sardine pate??

The restaurants slip it in as an easy moneymaker....but I've never known one be offended if we decline it.

Tia Ilda has always got a bad press for some reason.
Maybe the owners attitude????

We have used it on regular basis for 7 years, and never had a bad meal there.
Maybe a wee bit pricey....but not as much as the other places overlooking the square.

The "dracula kebab" is excellent.

We have tried Tia Ilda a few times over the years and never been particularly impressed.
We decided to give it another go a few weeks ago, mainly because we wanted a meal with a 'view'
It was awful, Tasteless and overpriced, I won't be giving it another go.

If we have a starter we refuse the couvert, even if they've put it on the table. Most of the restaurants we go to the cover is €2.50 which is reasonable & we also state the number it's for, a lot of people don't want the bread & paste but they tend to just bring it for the number at the table & so you end up with lots of wasted bread, cheese, etc., Why pay for 4 covers if only 2 of you are stuffing your beaks with it?

Depends which restaurant I go to regarding covers - if I know the service is slow or it look really busy then I'll have the cover so I can nibble and have a pint before the main course comes. Not too much of a concern as I rarely have starters or puddings.

We never have a starter or Desert either, my point was if you do not want it, it is not a problem to say no, if it looks like a wait we have a nice glass of wine without the Bread.....

We ate at Tia Ilda 2 nights ago. The couvert was priced at 4.95, but included bread, olives, sardine paste and carrots with cumin. There were 6 of us and the waiter asked if we wanted couvert we said yes and he suggested 2 portions between us all ,which was plenty. So 10 Euro for couvert was fine with us. Food was also good, as was the Planalto White wine!
