Pool filter sand renewing

Post by maccasa »

Anyone had their filter sand renewed in the pool filter? what was the interval between refills? I was told that it should last "several years"??

Just had mine done. It was replaced in 2011 but last winter we had the pool completely retiled, with a lot of remedial work required to sub-surface voids so the filter probably had a heavy load. Previous to 2011 the last sand filter change was 2005.

5 or 6 years between changes seems to be the general norm but a lot of heavy use of the pool especially with generous helpings of suntan oil can reduce this interval. After a period of time the sand solidifies and loses its ability to filter. My pool guy charges about€150 for the job.

I did our filter last year since it hadn't been done since before we bought the property in 2004. The 150kgs of sand cost 47,50€ and the replacement laterals cost 14,50€. I haven't noticed any difference in the quality of filtration. :?

We will need some retiling and remedial works soon. Who did you use, can you recommend them? What sort of costs are we talking for retiling?
