Insurance

Post by JimD »

Should I take out Public Liability insurance on my villa if I let ot out to clients, friends&family etc. I know they should have travel insurance to cover them, but should I take out cover as well?

Without a doubt Jim, it also covers the one that look after it as well as the guests. Mike

Have you any idea how much this might cost?

You need to make sure that your house and contents insurance (Portuguese property that is) covers guests and staff which I assume your management agent pays for on your behalf. The cost of this as an extra is small compared with UK policys as payouts for damages in Portugal are low compared with the UK. Any accident happening to a guest in Portugal would have to be heard in Portugal, not the UK. Sorry, can't remember the cost but did query it at the time because it was so low. Have a chat with the management agent. Our policy is with Luistania by the way. Mike

Sorry Jim, haven't a clue. Our original insurance was taken out with Royal Sun Alliance with english wording. They sold that part of their business to Luistania about 2 years ago with all conditions applying still. Unfortunatly the documents our agent receives is in Portuguese so we just pay the bill! I think you can still get quotes from UK companies but they used to be expensive and did not cover earthquakes which is quite important out there. One of the other forum members is a chap called Biffa who works with the Sovereign Group at Lagoa, he may throw some light on these messages once he sees them. Failing that the number for Sovereign is
00351 282 353659. Very good firm that do our accounts and tax returns, I suggest a general enquiry with them. Let me know how it goes because I would prefer our policy to be worded in English. Mike, Chislehurst.
ps. just found this www.sovereigngroup.com
