Tyre safety not included in annual check?

Post by gabby27 »

Call me ignorant......... but when we have our vehicle checked in the UK the tyres are fundamental to passing the MOT. We have recently had our portuguese car assessed for the annual road worthy check and with two totally bald tyres (no tread whatsoever) expected that these would be replaced (willingly). The only thing we failed on was emissions. Which was rectified. Can you please tell me why the tyre tread is not significant, especially since when it rains it floods the roads and surely grip is so important.
Not accepting the 'pass' on our car can anyone tell us where we can get the best value tyres. Thanks

why would you need a garage to tell you 2 completely bald tyres need replacing before you change them willingly or otherwise? you're putting your own and other peoples lives at risk

First Stop opposite the Fatacil are very good.

Well OK, the tyres are not completely bald and I exaggerated this a little to make a point, so I guess I set myself up for that sarcastic response, but it did surprise us that our car got through the inspection, and it was only verbally suggested by the garage that we change the tyres before the next inspection.

tyres ARE included in the annual IPO check - but if they arent ridiculously bad and all else passes, they have a 5-10% window of allowance and would only warn you.

Interestingly my tyres are classed as totally illegal - as they are not correct to the vehicle reg doc 235 x 15 x 55 - they are the correct "optional" 235 x 16 x 40 alloy wheels for the car, but as they are not stated on the doc they are classed as a fail on the certificate - however as all else passed I got a green one!

Tyres are included in the annual IPO check. By law the minimum depth is 1,6mm. Above that value the tires are legal. Of course that for your safety you probably should replace them before that. Another thing that is being discussed is the lifetime of the tyres. Pleople are talking about 4 years even if you do not use the car a lot and even if the tyres look like new. In the law there is noting about these four years lifetime, it is just a question of safety.

You got the green one but does it say anything in the document concerning the size of the wheels?

If so, in your next annual IPO check you will have to have that corrected or the car will fail.

It was already stated on the green form and they did not fail it this time.

You think that's bad, the back wheel on our 2 year old Range Rover collapsed last week! Fortunately, this was at low speed and close to the house, so nobody was hurt.

We reported a suspension problem during the summer, and the dealer undertook warranty work to make the repair. Clearly, this was not dealt with correctly, and the bolt securing the track rod was not effectively secured. Unaware of what was eventually going to happen, we set off for Portugal, and I drove with my wife, son and dog from Bolton to Carvoeiro and back. Over the weeks, the bolt was obviously working itself loose, and I noticed the car shuddering at speed. We booked the car back in immediately for a service, but specified in writing that the suspension was still incorrect. On receiving the car back, I drove to Newcastle, and the shuddering still occurred, to a worrying level. The day after, the wheel collapses! Can you imagine this happening with my family in the car driving through Spain or Portugal, or even through the UK for that matter, we'd all be dead.

The dealer initially tried to blame us for having two tyres replaced by a local tyre dealer and not them, and tried to secure a payment out of my wife for the remedial work. I was in CVO when this happened on Friday, but went ballistic with the dealership when I got back today. They have now accepted full responsibilty, but what a way to conduct a business, morally bankrupt, despite nearly killing us.

The matter will to stop here.

I am most grateful to everyone who experienced my concerns and did not condemn me as a wreckless driver, I was merely querying the system.
I would appreciate some sort of recognition of your response 'Sunman' as you dont help in this Forum if you just write rude and unhelpful comments which are clearly not welcome and very humiliating.
I thought the whole idea of this Forum was to offer helpful and supportive advice.

hi gabby,

i can assure you that my comment wasn't meant to be sarcastic, rude or unhelpful; I simply can't imagine why anybody would drive around in a car with what you called 'two totally bald tyres (no tread whatsoever)', that's not personal to you
and I did try to be helpful and offer advice, my next line said 'First Stop opposite the Fatacil are very good' -and I think they are

sorry you got upset
