EDP changes
We are just home from Carvoiero and while there we were told that because of the new competition rules with regard to utility companies, we needed to change our contract with EDP before the end of 2015. I thought it might be worth sharing this information on the forum. We had to change from universal to commercial, you see which contract you are currently on at the top of your bill. We went in to the EDP office in Portimao. You need to bring your passport, a copy of your bill, fiscal number and a Portuguese contact telephone number. When you get in to the office you get a ticket from the person at the door and sit down and wait your turn. We went on Friday and the guy said that was a busy day. We had to wait about 30 minutes which was ok. We explained that we wanted to change our contract and the young lady who spoke great English completed the process in about 15 minutes, job done. We left with a copy of our new contract and the same direct debit in place to continue paying our electricity bill. Apparently EDP Universal will close at the end of the year. I hope this helps fellow owners in Carvoeiro and surrounding area.
Re: EDP changes
I dont grt a bill - they just take the money via Direct Debit, occasionally reading the meter so this will be a challenge. I was disconnected about 6 months ago for apparently not providing a reading for several years, although a meter reader had turned up about a year beforehand. Sorting it out took ages. I had heard that the market had been opened up so I had better get on to this

Ceh
Don't be too daunted by the prospect of changing, it is easy enough to do. We get our bill sent by email every month and you can go onto the EDP site and submit your readings rather than having an estimated bill all the time. It helps us to keep track.

Re: EDP changes
If you have, or can find, enough details about your account so that you can register for EDP Online you will be able to make the transfer from EDPSU to EDP Comercial online. I did it from the UK.
Of course, with EDP Online you'll be able to report readings to avoid inaccurately estimated bills, see current and historic invoices etc etc.

Re: EDP changes
Thanks for the advice - I had to get the pool man to sort things out before as he flagged that there was no power! He should have the information - a job for the June trip, I think!

Re: EDP changes
We bought our apartment in March and went out for a week, all was fine, but when we returned on 2nd May there was no power to the property. It was a nightmare trying to find out why the power had been cut off, we spent 4 days trying to get the power put back on to no avail and finally gave up and came home. Our solicitor had informed EDP of the change of ownership, sent all the documentation off in February, as far as we know the account was paid up, but EDP still had the previous owner as the registered owner and we are not sure if the bill had been paid. A friend rang and tried to sort things out, EDP wanted 700 euros to switch the power back on that day, but this was a gross overestimate. Our solicitor spent an age on the phone to EDP who promised the power would be switched on, but 4 days in a property with no power is no fun. We even had to spend a night in a hotel just to have a shower. We are now going back out in June for a few days just to make sure the power will be switched on. Can anyone give us any information on how to check if the company has switched on the power or offer any information. I tried to go on their online website, but we don't have an FIM number, can anyone tell us if the FIM number is different for all customers or is it attached to the property??
thanks
Brian

Do you mean NIF - your Fiscal Number?

Re: EDP changes
Hi Pickwick
Many thanks for your reply. We don't have a bill for ourselves only the previous owner. I tried to register online, but it is the CPE/CUI number I am stuck on, where can I find this out please and is attached to the property?
Many thanks

Re: EDP changes
The Código de Ponto de Entrega (CPE) identifies the property.
If your previous owner's bill was with EDP Comercial the CPE should be shown on the front page in the bottom right of a box labelled e:nergi and takes the form of PT, followed by 16 digits and then two letters. This box may also have a graph showing consumption.
If the bill was from EDP Serviço Universal it will be on the front page in a box with the customer and tariff details and is abbreviated to Cód. Ponto Entrega.
I don't think you will be able to see an account for your previous owner on EDP Online (unless you can masquerade as the previous owner), so any current contract will have to be in your name.
If you are using automatic translations in your browser, you might find it easier to go without when comparing the Portuguese bill to the Portuguese website (or when reading the words in italics above
). Sometimes the translations throw up some unhelpful abbreviations. I have no idea what a CUI is.
Edit: A CUI is the Código Universal de Instalação (CUI) (em caso de adesão a produtos gás), so is probably irrelevant to an electricity supply.

Re: EDP changes
Many thanks Richard, I have tried to go online with all the information, but it doesn't recognise my details when I try to register, so I assume that the account hasn't been set up yet, very poor on someone's behalf, whether it be the solicitor or EDP. I will give it a few days and ring them after contacting my solicitor yet again.
We have copies of the previous owner's bills, he kindly left them for us for information. The breakdown appears to be EDP not responding to the solicitor's request.

Re: EDP changes
If you have a copy of the particular bill and a Portuguese bank account, to which you have online access, yes. If you have both those you could also set up a direct debit for all future bills.
Re: EDP changes
I would be very surprised if when opening a new account with EDP they didn't insist on direct debit. We pay a fixed amount each month and they balance it out once a year. AFAIK they only read my meter once a year and estimate the usage from that. As Pointersister posts they have an office in Portimao and also they will take your reading and send an accurate bill.
Re: EDP changes
We started a contract with edp last year. It was set up by the electrician who wired our new house. It took a while to sort it out but we have our bills emailed once a month and we pay by online transfer from our Portuguese bank account. Although we were told by the portimao office we couldn't have a contract without a habitation licence, somehow the electrician managed to set it up online without us signing anything. I would quite like to change to a direct debit in case I forget to pay on time but not sure how to do this without going back to the edp office. Can it be done online? I managed to change to dual tariff online but when I try to change to tri tariff it rejects it.joeysoap wrote:I would be very surprised if when opening a new account with EDP they didn't insist on direct debit.
