Help with fires

Does anybody else have problems with smoke when lighting their fires? I think it is the pine cones that i am using to start the fire. However in the past i have used cones and found them to be great.

Stopped usingp ine canes as they leave tarry deposits on the glass and in the chimney.
Now use those reconstitued logs you can buy in any supermarket, jumbo have them for E2.99 pack.

Try using plenty of newspaper and light it first to heat the cold air blocking the chimney. You need to get the cold air to rise in order that the smoke can go up the chimney and escape otherwise the smoke will fill the room.

When we first lit the fire last December we had a lot of trouble with smoke filling the lounge. After a word with our host we soon fixed it .... we shut the kitchen door when we were using the stove extractor fan.

Had the same problem last year, the fire was fine to start with, but then the lounge filled with smoke we were cooking dinner at the time, so will look at the extractor fan solution. Have been told of the damp/cold chimney possibility by a builder, so will looking at both solutions when we come out in March.
