Just to lighten up a bit, how about this bit of "salesmanship" from Walmart, in the USA:

What a load of bo***cks on this subject.

Iceland (or Overseas, it really does not matter) are providing a different range of products at prices significantly lower than in the French/Portuguese supermarkets.
Choice is what matters - choice to eat Portuguese like EMM or choice to supplement our Iberian foods with favourites from our country of birth.

At worst it could put some of the smaller imported foods suppliers out of business or at best it could bring down the prices of these products in our local supermarkets.

I remember the cod wars up in Icelandic waters as well. I was in them.
The trawler I was on, was arrested by an Icelandic gunboat, and we ended up in Iserfjiord.....until we broke out......

The Iceland butcher has almost exclusively Irish beef (except 1 joint of Spanish T Bone on display today, all other beef was Irish) and all the lamb was Irish.

On that alone it would be worth at least one visit. Irish beef and lamb are amongst the best in the world.

I suspect that most of the ex pats in the the Algarve would not touch Iceland with an 40' bargepole back in the UK but are more than happy to visit in Portugal. It's called choice.

I am all for choice and this is an extra choice. We mostly shop in Intermarche but it has it's limits - especially in the soda water, tonic water etc dept, usually half empty shelves and never replaced.

I m prepared to be corrected but there is no company called Iceland, it is Overseas. Iceland is just a trading name for the shops.
Of course the Portuguese company could be called something else " anyone know " ??

Of course as Roy says competition is good and for those who want the popular UK branded products that is a good thing but that is not my cause for complaint.
The fact that this shop sells much of that which is already available is neither here nor there it was the importation of some of the worst products sold in the UK.
As a previous poster said most of those who live in the Algarve would NOT shop in Iceland Frozen Foods in the UK.

EMM - From reading your earlier posts, it sounded to me that you were heavily criticising the expats, or Anglo Algarvians as you referred to us, for being happy about the store opening, and also that it would have a negative effect on the Portuguese supermarkets etc. not just about the salt and high fat and calorie content, as you now say.

As for most expats NOT shopping at Iceland in the UK, we don't need to, we have one in Guia.
