We have the luxury of an operating fireplace this time. As we would like to supplement the central heating (dreaming) is there dry firewood available in the area for a reasonable price?

There is a garden/landscape company next to Julio's restaurant. Their firewood is kept under tarpaulins and you can fill your car boot up for about 15euros.

Large supplier can be found on the main (newer) road to Silves - you can see the sign from the road - Fill

That is by far the most expensive way of buying firewood!!
There is a place on the left on the main road just before you get to Rocha Brava, you can buy up from 1/4 a metric tonne at the rate of about 80 euros a tonne. ( they deliver and stack)
This less than half the price you'll pay at the roadside.

Bruce - This is not by the roadside (I agree that is expensive & often damp), but on an industrial estate just out of Silves - J

80 euros a tonne? Are you sure? This seems incredibly cheap.

Do you think I can burn a tonne of firewood in two months? It' s got to be two cold months which I hope will not be this coming new year.

I light my fire at about 4 pm each day in the winter and perhaps in the morning on the few days when it is very cold. I reckon to burn between one and a half and two tonnes over the winter.

In England I pay £65 per tonne for softwood logs and £75 per tonne for hardwood logs so 80 euros per tonne seems comparable.

Is this the same place?....just wondering what a 1/4 metric tonne looks like....usual places have a barrow load for 10€....nice and dry last year at a place on the left, driving into CVO, but a couple of hundred yards before the (non-operational) traffic lights.

Wood is very heavy! If you light your fire for say 6 to 8 hours each day you will use the best part of 2 tonnes in a month, especially if it is an open fire where you can't control the rate of burn as you can in a wood burning stove.

You know the large white bags of sand etc that get craned off lorries for building work? One of those completely full is about 1 tonne of wood.
