Tolls on the A22

Latest information is that an agreement has been reached between the car rental association and the government;
A new law will be passed whereby a flat fee will be charged ALL rental cars; the amount has yet to be agreed but 1,85 euro per day seem to be a fair guess. This would include unlimited traffic on motorways.
The new system should be in place before the end of March 2012 and will last for at least 6 months until stage 3* with transponders in all rental cars are in place.
Until the flat fee is in place toll payments must be made at the post office or a PayShop (please see
http://www.carvoeiro.com/A22tolls )
*All Car Rental Companies will be forced to equip all fleet vehicles with a electronic device that communicates with the Tolls system. Clients will have to hold a valid credit card. When signing the Rental Agreement form clients must also sign a contract with one of the Companies in charge of the Tolls (National Post Office – CTT) which is valid during the rental agreement period. All Tolls charges will be charged directly on the Client’s credit card. If the Client doesn’t use Tolls, nothing will be charged. Anyway it’s predicted to have a 0,60 Euros daily charge for the electronic device rental.

Thanks Steen
That sounds like a step forward although 1.85 a day for everyone seems steep?!
The sooner all cars are fitted with transponders the better....

Yes, thanks for this information Steen. I guess it depends on how much you use the A22 during your visit, but I will be more than happy to pay that flat fee. I'm just relieved that something is being done about it in time for us holiday makers.

That will be a bit steep when we arrive on the 17th March we will be hiring a car for 46 days!!! I am
sure my husband will throw a wobbly at 1.85 per day for 46 days and we
will probably only use the motorway about 3 times.

46 days at €1.85 = €85.10 that is extortionate. Most people will only travel on the motorway two or three times during their stay which would equate to about €18.00 surely €20.00 per rental would have been better one size fits all.

It looks as if your hire period will start before this new payment kicks in.
Let's face it, on past history, late March will probably translate to late April....or later!
Anyway, I'm sure you will have done a very special deal for an early season 46 day hire????
(Call in and see us when you arrive)

Yes lets hope that it kicks in after we arrive otherwise I think we shall have to have a word with
Steen as we hire with Algarvedriver, there is no way we will pay 1.85 euros per day for 46 days
it would be outrageous and only use the A22 about 3 times.
When we are settled we will call in Bruce

Perhaps Portugal should look at this system, or some enterprising person should take it on.

Chances of a new law being passed by end of March ( 6 weeks away)........zero, I reckon......and hope, as I don't fancy a 1.85€/day charge for a month with minimal A22 use!

I totally agree 1.85 seems far too much I'll continue to use the N125 until the all this mess has been sorted out, Sunday 19th it took me around about 55 mins, going back 8.30am an hour 6mins.

Arrived in the dark Monday night, could not find the 125 - then found it, then lost it again - ater 45 minutes got back onto the 22 at junction 12 and stayed on it ... they need to make the signs clearer for those of us driving on our own, in the drk without maps!!!

I was mighty cross - walked into town to pay today and was told by several people that I ought to have used the 125. I KNOW!!!!!!

Despite previous negative posts couldn't stay away. Came along the A22 last night as I couldn't face the 125 in the dark. Hardly any traffic. I wonder how long the service stations will stay in business. I will try to pay the toll in the next few days (any advice on the nearest pay point from Gramacho?) The chap at the car hire said that they will pay the return toll using my credit card details. Will await the outcome with interest. Hopefully it will all be sorted by the time of my next trip in Sept.

Probably the tobacconist/newspaper shop in Intermarche.
