How recent is the trend for using a bin for loo paper been in action on the Algarve ?

Never used that "system" on previous visits.

Ages (as in years) - but no one seems to follow it.

In Turkey nearly all (older) WCs have a bin for loo paper. The sewer pipe bore is too small to take paper and it can soon clog up if any is flushed down, often resulting in costly repairs and clearing. Mind you, I have never come across this in Portugal.

I think it is for older buildings with smaller pipes - but how you can tell the pipe size of a property just from looking at the outside seems a bit tricky. As I said, I don't know anyone who doesn't flush paper down the loo in Portugal!

First came across this in Turkey a few years ago, must admit I find it disgusting, Hemmingways I'm sorry to say were using this method a while back, not sure if they still are (in the gents anyway).

It is common all across Southern Europe.

Many villas and apartment have small bore plumbing,,,,its no big deal. Use the bin.

When I arrived home from Turkey in May on my visit to the toilet I actually put the paper in the bin we have in the bathroom!

I soon fished it out again before Sharen saw it.

This is why Bidets were invented!!

in all my holidays in portugal/spain/italy/france never came across this.
when we visited istanbul a few years ago we stayed up near taxim square, all the hotels up there are modern and have modern toilets.
we were shocked when out in restaurants and bars etc in the 'older' part of town to discover the bins for toilet paper.

yes, but it's disposing Pete - travelled all over Europe for many years, never ever came across this until I went to Turkey, fowl behaviour.

Only places that ive had to do it was turkey and bulgaria, kinda yucky!
