What is happening to our society?

Post by shanagarry »

This topic is being started because posting it where it belongs could result in it being deleted for being 'off topic' - if that makes sense?

There is a parallel topic on this forum titled 'news item about The Square' - which I am sure many will be familiar with. What started out as a mild observation about the changes to The Square has degenerated into a vitriolic attack on a number of long standing Forum members by new members. These attacks started shortly after Forum members highlighted the dishonest activities of a person who promoted their property management business on here and then secured clients as a result and relieved them of a lot of money without doing anything in return.

I am not highlighting that particular activity - what I am concerned with is the nastiness of the attacks and the harm they could do to Carvoeiro. The wider picture is that most of these appear to be from some badly 'educated' British people and aimed at their own kind. What does that say to the rest of mankind?

There have been many new members appearing and asking genuine questions about facilities in our village - and they are very welcome to do so. In fact it is very helpful to most people. Can you imagine what the must feel when they read some of the stuff that has been posted - they could be forgiven for thinking that the place is a haven for nasty, aggressive Brits looking for any opportunity to have a row. They could go to Spain if that's what they want - but it's not - they want to come to Carvoeiro because they have heard so many good things about our village.

Whatever happened to the art of 'considered reasoning' ? It seems that the only way to get your point across in today's society is to adopt an aggressive stance, spew out insults and avoid addressing the point in question at all costs. Put more simply - it is a mild form of terrorism. If you don't get your way - take whatever steps you feel will achieve your goal - regardless of the consequences. It is not something that is the domain of the few - it is practised by Politicians and Trades Union people - avoid answering succinctly and to the point - but it is not compulsory.

Can I appeal to those who do not want to enter into an open and civilised debate on any matter or whose sole purpose in posting on this forum is to cause offence - please go elsewhere :(

I agree shanagarry - however this is an open, public form and hence it is impossible to prevent malicious or just plain mischievious posters from hijacking topics or trying to destroy this forum for whatever purposes.

I only hope that anyone looking in, or thinking of becoming members do not get discouraged.

Having been drawn into one of these "discussions" I now believe its best to just ignore them the best you can, albeit difficult at times.

Well said Shanagarry. You have put my thoughts into print. The reason I have not expressed them on the forum is because of the amount of abusive and ill mannered posts that seem to becoming the norm. Any one is entitled to their opinion and to express it on this forum, however so many posts now seem to include personal abuse which I feel is not acceptable.

Like you I got drawn into a topic - the Mazza debacle - predominantly because as a property owner I could see what had happened and became incensed at the absurdity of it. What I wasn't prepared for was the unjustified abusive outbursts - that supported the wrongdoers - ludicrous.

I agree that the very nature of this forum leaves it open to all - the well meaning and the downright bad and nasty - we just have to learn to rise above it - difficult as that may be :)

I agree, when I once said a comment that was just my opinion I was verbally abused, when I answered that if nothing nice to say do not bother I got another mouthful and was told good for me, when Isaid if you cannot say anything dont say anything, in the end I did not reply, People keep having a go at the Cranes, why I am not sure, Michael does a lot of work for the Forum, and the times we have been out with them they are both really nice, so leave them alone.................

Hear, Hear - I echo what has been said. I try to rise above the insults and just report them as personally abusive and off topic, but when they are attacking you, your family and/or friends it is so difficult not to rise to their bait. As my school reports often said 'could try harder'.

It's probably the fault of the education system - lesser educated people are unable to engage in reasoned debate and resort to the abusive and insulting behaviour as a form of defence.

Michael and Sharen Crane are not known to me personally - although Michael and I have exchanged correspondence and phone calls - as far as I can see they are decent and honourable people with a penchant for openness and honesty. Nothing much wrong with any of that in my book :)

Shanagarry, TD

It has gone to pot! Or rather the values and manners you are referring to are long gone due to pot, class A drugs and the crime and misery they bring. Everyone is looking out for themselves not their neighbours and frightened to be seen as a decent law abiding citizen as it will be construed as weakness and then the jackals will pounce!! Let's face it the hoodlums are everywhere now (even on these forums) and you have to be on your guard whether you are writing on this forum, walking down the street or sitting in your own home.

When I was a youngster I did not know anybody who had been burgled or mugged. Now at 50 I do not know anybody who has not been a victim of crime!! Society is f*c*ed, end of, so get used to it.

I used to think that most of the Algarve still had that basic law abiding charm where good manners and tolerance were still values to be admired but sadly I think it has got poisoned along with nearly everywhere else on this Earth. It is dog eat dog and it is getting worse every year.

In 10 years I predict we will all have razor wire round our properties, proper vicious guard dogs, guns and solid steel shutters and doors to deter the scum. Mark my words!

I would like to make a point of saying I am not from the UK, which I am very pleased about and that this forum is not just for people who are as it's about a place in Portugal.

Also you seem to have a small brain or memory as you made the insults about my grammer, which I feel is unfair and personel as you don't even know me. What gives you the right to do this, I just want to have my say without being insulted.

I also spend what seems to be more time then most people on this website in carvoeiro and I was trying to say with my bad grammer is that this wesite does nothing but put carvoeiro down, why if you own properties there would you do this? Whould you do this to the place you live in? I think the answer would be NO.

I am sorry you feel like this and that you are proud not to come from the UK. I am.
Nothing that anyone posts on here would make me change my mind about Carvoeiro, I think we are all wise and intelligent enough to know you and your (I assume) aliases are doing this for a purpose - possibly to feed your own miserable situation/s.
Why cant we all agree to disagree and get on with enjoying the forum - we all have disagreements at times and hopefully we are all grown up enough to get over them.
Have a nice day :D
