Waste of my holiday time today caused by the farcical toll system

Go to post office, show rental agreement, lady behind desks sees that tolls have been incurred but not paid by previous user of hire car. Says she cannot split the tolls so we just pay ours. So leave without paying.

This is what puts me off coming again - wasting my time. Happy to pay the €4+ which we have incurred but not happy to waste my time.

EMM still thinks I am bothered about the money (see his post above) when all along I have been happy to pay but not have my time wasted.

Going to the US in six weeks. Can't wait. No silly systems there for road tolls-just pay a human and be on one's way.

It's even better in South Florida Adam - tolls are all electronic and they just debit your credit card which is swiped by the car rental firm. You get your receipt when you return the car - so simple

The Tolls have certainly caused a massive debate on this site and even on other sites and in Newspapers. While obviously there are many people on this site who are residents in Portugal or spend a considerable period of time there each year, there are Millions who just get there for our annual 2 week vacation. I have been there on 5 vacations over the past 8 years and have always enjoyed it. I dont believe that anybody is complaining about the roads being Tolled, same as Ireland where its starting to become more widespread. The only complaint that I see which is fully justified, is the payment of the Toll on returning to the Airport at the end of the vacation. If it cant be paid for 2 days after you hand the car back, then thats plain stupid and very shortsighted by whoever introduced it. If the ability was available to pay on handing the car back or even online when you get home, then that would make sense. The 125 is not a bad road, but it does have its fair share of lunatic drivers, so I like to avoid it for longer journeys. Otherwise one scratch on the car and we know what that costs with certain car hire companies.
If more and more people stop using the motorway, then surely they will realise that they got something very wrong! :P

i had the same problem as above a couple of weeks ago. Planned to use the A22 from airport to Sesmarias, and the N125 back to airport so not to have to work around a payment issue when back in England.
Went to post office 3 days after motorway use, to be advised that someone had used the car on the same day and they couldnt separate it.

Upon calling the car hire company i was advised that the post office could print an invoice out showing the times of each trip, and to send to them for investigation. Upon chatting to the post office clerk this was possible only when the days are different. If on the same day then this due cash cannot be split, which I find very adequate. I paid the full amount, which was only €10 to ensure I was clear.

My problem is with the car hire companies, I went with Sixt and their policy was use the tolls as many times as you want. The Govt will send them a €20 fine for non payment and they will pass that onto me. I am sure I read previously that the fines were per trip, so i you used the road 20 times, you could be fined €20*20. Surely this is not th right communication. I didnt do this but I overheard the couple next to me very happy to utilise this offer.

Anyway, the trip back on the N125 brought back some memories as I hadnt really used it during the past 8 years. There has been some big changes, but also some not so big changes to parts & it was pleasant going through the Algarve and seeing something of it, whilst travelling back to the airport.
From Sept onwards I'm limited to school holidays which no doubt will have multi users of cars on changeovers days using the A22.

I'm sure I have asked this before and received a deathly silence:

Does anyone know of anyone who has been fined for non-payment of tolls since Dec 2011 ?

my last car hire and my next car hire are both at 8pm, so undoubtably the car will have been on the road earlier in the day and quite probably on the motorway.

I used the motorway in December, few days after the tolls and nothing yet.

I didn't use the motorway on past two visits and on both occasions my car hire company gave me back the credit card impress at the airport.

if the fines come in I can see a lot of car hire companies closing down (no money to pay the fines, no way of knowing who what or when) and reopening as new companies a few weeks later.

At this stage I really don't understand the lethargy of the authories, surely €1 per day levy on each car hired would increase their take by 10000%.

We drove the motorway from Faro to our Quinta this time, waited the 48 hours and then went into Lagoa Post Office to collect a parcel and pay the toll. No problem at all, took my hire agreement with me and she just charged me for the trip we did ... seemed simple to me. We will do this again next visit as it is so much quicker and quieter in the evening on the motorway but we will use the N125 back, as this will be at about 7am I don't think we will have much traffic back either.

If, by tolls, you mean a method of collecting revenue from users, then probably not!
