Is it just me - but when I saw that picture of the spray bottle with yellowish fluid inside and labelled 'Home Made' I thought it was something else we all produce in various quantities every day!
I don't know if it would repel the flying nasties, but you would find the space at a crowded bar opening up before you!

Hi again,

I just wanted to say thanks to the contributors who responded to my post offering suggestions and advice on how to deal with any problems regarding mosquitos when we come to Carvoeiro in August. I have to admit that one or two of the responses helped to brighten an otherwise dull day here in the wilds of Wiltshire.

It certainly looks efficient, effective, I don't think so. There are millions of the little bleeders (like that ?) out there. Areas of stagnant water and damp swampland used to be sprayed with DDT years ago, it reduced the Malaria outbreaks around the world, but DDT, along with other "useful" stuff has been banned.
Just love the smell of creosote. :) :)

Made one this afternoon and have had it on the terrace near a very large yucca for 2 hours.

So far 1 x angry wasp
several assorted flies
1 nosey ant
0 mozzies, but it's still early so fingers crossed

It''s 19:30 and 31 degrees ATM, so there should be loads of the little buggers out later tonight.

Last night tried sitting out for an hour or so without protection and got bitten to buggery. Tonight used the reliable Jungle spray and not one bite. So after 2 nights of the trap being in situ, very few mozzie's in the trap, just 100's of ants and other bugs.

Back to the drawing board for alternative remedies

Two trips to Majorca last year and no bites, Estellence in July and Cala Bona in October. Strange because normally I get eaten alive :( I am already on the garlic and Vit B complex tablets in preparation for a holiday yet to be booked for this year. I also drink a lot of tonic water but so far nothing has really worked. Although I must point out that this is the first time that I have tried the Vit B complex so the jury is out on that one. Already stocked up with Avon "skin so soft" and deet wipes. My planned holiday time is around the 24th of August so I will let you know how I get on.

Been coming to CVO for around 11/12 years now and v seldom get bitten - maybe one bite/stay, if that.
Always use Autan - sprayed after early evening shower, for the night out. Also have a liquid machine plugged in the apartment from around 6 in the evening to wake-up time in the morning.
The only time i've got bitten a lot in recent years was in Corfu a few years ago. Those mossies seemed to be v resistant to Autan!!

The army issues brewers yeast tablets to all personnel when abroad. Last year in Spain in early July 'er indoors started taking them 8 days before departure and through the holiday - nothing else. 2 tablets a day. I didn't and I can confirm -painfully - that there were plenty of mozzies about. She was untouched -by mozzies I mean. We've just got back from Spain this year but it's too early for the little b's so no big bites but strangely we were all bitten by midge type things who seem to like brewers yeast - little bites disappearing in a day.

Stevie-C we went to Estellence 2 years ago and what a fabulous place it is, we stayed at the Ca's Xorc and the mozzies were out in full force every night - deet spray always works for me.

Hey bruce, we went in Mid July and I wasn't bitten once. Not familiar with Ca's Xorc, we stayed at the Hotel Maristel, it was a cracking hotel. Only issue we had was the size of the balcony and the uncomfortable seats. Our room was in the annex which faced the sea; each night we had spectacular sunsets and to watch the stars "moving" at night was great. The village has nothing to offer in the way of nightlife and with only three or four restaurants not including our hotel, the choices for eating out were limited. However, that is why we chose the place and loved our week there :D
