That's one of the reaons they take an imprint of your credit card. So they can get back fines and stuff.

The responsibility, for all road traffic offences in Portugal, lies with the registered keeper, which by the way is worth bearing in mind if you loan your car to friends and family whilst visiting.

I still find it staggering that how to pay a road toll can cause grown people to work themselves up into such a lather, cancel holidays, and break out in cold sweats and rashes!

Exactly!

People will not be prepared to go along with that. I wouldn't be prepared to give a hire company cart blanche to charge my card for stuff I didnt have any control over.

That's why I think some people will back away from the hire companies, and just opt for transfers.

I think that the hire companies will be forced to levy a fixed charge in order to cover their liability for tolls during a hire period.

In Dublin there is the M50 motorway which is a toll charging. You can pay the charge online, on the phone or at the many garages in the County of Dublin. Just give the till operator your reg. and they do the rest. The latter is the most convenient. All that ringing-up or online paying is a pain.

The Portuguese government are following their Spanish neighbours and starting to take tourists for granted. I hate to say it but the N125 will be even more heavily used and more deaths will occur because the A22 will be avoided.

You allow them that privilege every time you sign your hire contract

WHy staggering?
Many people on here have their own properties (as opposed to holiday makers) and STILL are extremely perturbed abouthe tolls.

Because

IT IS NOT OBVIOUS OR CLEAR HOW THEY WILL WORK!!!!

If you are calm and relaxed about guests and friends visiting Portugal having to pay for tolls by finding a post office or some other yet undisclosed method, then good for you.

THe rest of us are stll concerned that if it is NOT easy then friends are likely to get stung by the car rental companies for non payment of the toll.

I can only think you are easily staggered :D

You are being cynical Roy, it is the same system that is used throughout portugal on the new road networks.
I was discussing this with business contacts in the North of Portugal and their response was " typical Algarve " always complaining about one thing or another.

.
2 wrongs don't make a right
The Algarve is quite a different situation to the North due to the huge influx of tourists in summer.
I think Roys cynical view is probably correct :(

I read that the reason they haven't installed toll booths is because the A22 is just not suitable for them, they would have to widen the road considerably to accomodate the toll booths & it was not feasable in the areas that they need to locate the booths in. The A22 wasn't made for toll booths.

That's right blue because it would never have been built if that had been the plan - the EU finance was based purely on the basis of a non toll road which agreement they are now going to break and which may still be challenged by Spain - let's hope so !

As was said in the previous discussion about this and in this one the main issue is the people who will be hiring cars for their holiday or like us to do short visits to their property and don't have a car in Portugal therefore use the car hire companies.

I have no objection to paying the small amount we believe it will be to use the A22 it is just HOW when you get an early or very late flight back to the UK are you meant to pay for the toll when the Post Office in the airport is shut! So far there is no other suggestion as to how you would pay your toll to drive back to the airport other than the car hire company taking from your credit card. (can you imagine the ques at the Post Office to pay these tolls anyway!!)

It is not that grown people are getting het up and 'in a lather' about it, just that we would like some straight forward, correct information either from the Government or from the car hire companies as to how the toll will be paid on your final trip back to the airport out of 'office hours'.

It's déjà vu all over again. Why not just reread the previous topic?

Michael for the few trips you make I can understand that it is not an issue to you but for others it is.

Several months have passed due to the general election and during this time the authorities had a perfect opportunity to sort out the issues that had been raised. However, it appears that all that happened was that the clock stopped. Few people are complaining about paying the potential toll but many have well founded concerns about the impractical way in which it is proposed that it will operate.
