Re: Car hire
Have you tried emailing Steen?Janette wrote:Does anyone have any helpful information on hiring a car for one or two months over the winter period?
Re: Car hire
We are here for three months, or longer, during the winter months and have used Travelrent for years and always receive a good vehicle at a fair price. Their website is: travelrent.pt
Re: Car hire
Follow the link at the top of this page to Algarve Driver. Steen the webmaster of this site runs Algarve Driver as an agent for YOR Car Rentals and the commission helps to pay for this site. Having said that we have been renting several times a year for over a decade now and although we have used other firms from to to time we always come back to Algarve Driver/YOR as they seem the most consistent on price, quality of vehicles and service. Steen offers a price match guarantee other than July/August so for the winter should be able to give you a good deal. Rather than just going through his site http://www.algarvedriver.com/refs.php?refid=4n it might be worth emailing him webmaster@carvoeiro.com as you are looking for long term rental.
Re: Car hire
Try atlas choice, I have used them for the past 4 years & never found anybody to match their prices.
Re: Car hire
Try autorent especially phoneing or emailing them for a special quote, we have just booked up for all our weeks this year and got a good price (10 weeks spread over three visits in the coming year) fhey are very helpful and polite.

Avoid Yor Car like the plague - should be called Rent-a-Wreck
Re: Car hire
I've never had a problem with them or their cars.shanagarry wrote:Avoid Yor Car like the plague - should be called Rent-a-Wreck
Realistically though unless you choose a rental firm that replaces its whole fleet every season there is always a risk of older cars having problems. However if you go for a firm that replaces its fleet every season you are almost guaranteed to pay more for that privilege.
My advice to Janette who asked the original question is to search this site for "car hire" (or similar) as the question has been asked many times before and many members have posted their experiences - have a read and then make your mind up based on concensus.

economycarhire.com
Read the reviews and be confident in the service. Ive used them for 40 + rentals. Never had a problem. The best companies are "Drive4fun" and "Rentauto". English speaking and very reliable.

Re: Car breakdown cover
Thanks everyone really helpful. I do have another question, although not linked to Portugal! I am trying to get European car breakdown cover for 1 year but most companies seem to cap at 90 days, does anyone have any experience or helpful info please. Many thanks.

Re: Car hire
I agree with Farol's comments. I have used YOR/AlgarveDriver many times since 2003 and find them very good. Never had any problems with them and when we had our car damaged in a restaurant car park they were really helpful. Yes, they don't have the newest cars but do you actually need to be driving round the Algarve in a shiny new car which will undoubtedly get scratched and dinged! As long as the cars are reliable then that is my main concern for me and we have never experienced a breakdown with them.
