It was said originally the 15th April but I don't know if that still stands, I think it does.

Re: Tolls on the A22
I wouldn’t be too sure, it may depend on how many defaulters there are, a mate of mine got a parking fine (his own car, not a hired one) in Rome and ignored it, a few weeks later he got an EU summons in the post demanding payment.
Re: Tolls on the A22
in relation to the last few posts re non payment of the tolls by non portugese registered cars,be careful that the debt isn't sold on to a third party for debt collection. Unlikely in this case but local authorites around the border in Ireland (both sides) were plagued by cross border motorists ignoring parking fines etc. solved the problem by selling on the debt to such agencies. the irish police have also been know to 'escort' speeding norn ireland motorists to cash points to collect on the spot fines. regarding tourists who hire a car, I cannot see how they can be pursued for non payment, but slightly different in most of our cases as they have our NIF number etc. Probably not that efficient in all honesty and anyway I suspect they will be wary of breaking any privacy laws in relation to information disclosed. after all it is just a toll payment not a major felony. Could solve the problem simply anyway but just sticking €1 per day on all cars hired and overall would probably be close to a break point. cost effective, no hassle collecting - if there is such a thing in tax payment. too simple really, so a more complicated system is sure to be found.

I have heard the foreign cars, once the amount due reaches a certain level....fines, interest etc they pass onto the country of orgin with the license plate etc..
Also it has been said that the electric tolls will also be speed traps...not calculating adverage speed but actual speed as you pass through each electronic toll!

That's certainly the way it works in France,......AND....the way the new cameras are configured on the M3, M4, M40 and M6, even if, officially, they arent used that way yet.bife73 wrote:I have heard the foreign cars, once the amount due reaches a certain level....fines, interest etc they pass onto the country of orgin with the license plate etc..

I notice that a lot of people have 'heard' or 'read' things about the proposed toll but they never (or hardly ever) quote a reference. Just how much 'fact' is in this topic?

As the Portuguese government introduced this stupid scheme; they will suffer at the next general election with electoral losses especially in the Algarve. It is quite ironic as to To Whom the Bell TOLLS will be pointing at them.

Re: Tolls on the A22
Anyone know what the hire car companies are going to do yet? We go out on the 13th April, so that should be ok but coming back to the airport might be an issue. Guess it will have to be the N-125!
Re: Tolls on the A22
The trouble is there is very limited confirmed information, and what was confirmed has since been altered. I own a travel agency & have a fleet of 7 vehicles that do airport transfers. They are up & down the motorway upto to 10/15 times a day. I still can't issue rates that 100% correct for the my guests or agents...as nobody but nobody can confirm things to me 100%. I have contacted the local tourism board, tourism board in Lisbon, APAVT (Portuguese ABTA), local council, IMTT in Faro....everyone suggests what "could" be happening, but refuse to confirm in writing.Michael Crane wrote:I notice that a lot of people have 'heard' or 'read' things about the proposed toll but they never (or hardly ever) quote a reference. This what I managed to obtain:
They the charge will be 7 to 8 cents per km...this for class 1 vehicles, no idea of costs for the other classes? But compaing to the North I'm estimating 12 to 13 cents per km for a class 2 (Jeeps, minibuses & some MPV's)
Box can be bought from the CTT or Via Verde...if you reside 10 or 20km from the motorway (depending on who you speak to) you get 10 free journeys per month, after that you get 15% discount. Only for 1yr then will be revised (I assume redeuced or stopped)
You can also not fit a box...you then have 5 days to go to the CTT and pay the tolls, by giving them your plate number off the car. If you don't it is a 80 euro fine + interest.
There are cases up North where drivers are being fined for speeding, the each electronic toll consists on two bars (like the ones that hold up the road signs), On these are fitted two rows of sensors, cameras & radar. It does not calculate adverage speed from toll to toll, but actual speed as you pass through it.
This is all the information I have managed to accumulate after hours of reading reports online and phoning every department that should know!! But then again...it might all change again.......as it has before!!!

Re: Tolls on the A22
I think I'll watch what bife73 has to report in future.
Re: Tolls on the A22
agreed. good post. and the same difficulties apply to car hire firms. As the Portugese people have to pay these tolls, then I have no problem with paying them. but as a (fairly) frequent hirer of a car I don't know how the new rules will apply or how I am expected to pay. certainly have no intention of hiring a device and then queueing up at CTT in Fare Airport to return device.

If the article in the Algarveresident is to be believed, you may be able to queue in the CTT at Faro, give them the registration number and they'll tell you what the bill is. Simples ?certainly have no intention of hiring a device and then queueing up at CTT in Fare Airport to return device.

Not so "Simples when your flight is early and they are not open, what do you do then???laserblazer wrote:If the article in the Algarveresident is to be believed, you may be able to queue in the CTT at Faro, give them the registration number and they'll tell you what the bill is. Steen do you have any information about how Yor is going to work these tolls out with people like us who hire a car from them/you, we don't always see a rep at the airport as our flights can be early or very late so we wouldn't be able to pay at the airport, I really don't like using the N125 and basically we only use the motorway to get to and from the airport.
I have read all the info so far but car hire is still not clear at all.
