"I have yet to taste a decent portuguese wine" I can't believe you said that Jose!
Apart from the aformentioned Rose wines, that taste fantastic chilled, what about the robust reds from the Duro and Alantejo?
You need to do some serious tasting. (i do envy you)

Defesa's really good, first time I had the rose was in Rei das Praias, Caneiros, served chilled in huge tulip glasses. Yummy.

I think Jose is being a little disingenuous......
Portugal may not be in the top 5 worlds wine producers, but they produce some very good and drinkable wine, at reasonable prices.
I hate wine snobs

You missread Jose's post Blue, he's not being snobbish. Mother doesn't allow him to drink alcohol.
Just realised it might be me you are calling a snob. Which is true, I'll only buy the best that Plus has to offer, even if it means spending €2
